Nuns Run Candle Making Website For Women From Crisis Long Island
nuns have started a candle making business as a way to help women in crisis.
Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, who have been making candles for years as a fundraiser, this week launched Nun’s Run Candle Company, which will donate a portion of its proceeds to charities that help women.
“There are so many women out there who are struggling and we wanted to do something to help them,” said Sister Maureen Kelleher, one of the nuns who started the business.
The candles, which come in scents like lavender, vanilla and cucumber, are made with soy wax and beeswax, and are hand-poured.
“We’re not just making candles, we’re making a difference,” Kelleher said.

The sisters say they were inspired to start the business after seeing the impact of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood’s annual Christmas gift basket program, which provides food and gifts to women in crisis.
“We’ve been giving baskets to these women for years and we’ve seen the difference it makes in their lives,” Kelleher said. “Now we’re hoping that our candles can make an even bigger impact.”
The nuns are hoping to expand their business in the future and are currently looking for retailers who would be interested in selling their candles.

Candle Music-Making
Candles are often burned for ambiance, but they can also be used to create music. The flame of a candle produces a steady stream of heat, and when that heat is directed at a metal rod, it will vibrate. If you hold a metal rod against the side of a glass jar, you can create a musical note. The further you move the metal rod away from the jar, the higher the note will be.
To create a scale, you can use different size jars. For example, to create a C scale, use a large jar for the C note, and use progressively smaller jars for the D, E, F, G, and A notes. The B note can be created by using a small jar and a toothpick.
When you light the candle, hold the metal rod against the side of the jar and wait for the note to stabilize. Then, use your other hand to slowly move the metal rod up the side of the jar. As you move the metal rod up the jar, the pitch of the note will change. You can also experiment with moving the metal rod back and forth across the jar to create a tremolo effect.
