Candle Making Supplies Checklist
Candle making is a fun and creative activity for people of all ages. It allows you to create unique, customized pieces that you can use yourself or give as gifts. However, in order to start making candles, you need certain supplies and materials. Here is a comprehensive list of the supplies that are necessary for candle making:
Wax
The wax is the key component of candle making and comes in many different forms. Here are just a few:
- Paraffin wax
- Bee’s wax
- Soy wax
- Blend of different waxes
Wicks
The wick is used to draw up the hot wax so that it can be burned. The size and type of wick you need depends on the type of wax you are using. Common wicks include:
- Wooden wicks
- Cotton or paper core wicks
- Zinc core wicks
Containers or Molds
You need something to hold the wax as it sets. Generally, this is done with a container or a mold. Common containers for candle making include:
- Glass jars or tumblers
- Metal tins
- Ceramic pots
- Silicone molds
Thermometer
A thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the wax. It is necessary to ensure that the wax is not overheated and also to prevent it from cooling too quickly, as this can cause the candle to crack.
Dyes and Fragrances
The wax can be dyed with a variety of dyeing methods. The type of wax you are using will determine the type of dye that is most suitable. Generally, candle dyeing can be done with liquid dyes and pigments, or with powdered dyes.
You can also add fragrance to your candle. There are a variety of scented waxes that can be used, as well as fragrance oils and essential oils.

In addition to the supplies listed above, you will also need the following for your candle-making project:
- Styrofoam or wooden blocks
- Heat gun, hair dryer or double boiler
- Glue gun
- Glass or plastic measuring cups
- Scissors
- Stirring utensils
