How to Make Soy Wax Candles at Home

There’s nothing quite like the pleasant aroma of burning candles to set the mood for a cozy evening in! However, if you’d like to take your candle-making experience to the next level, why not try making your own soy wax candles at home? Soy wax candles are becoming increasing popular due to their contributions to a greener environment, as they’re natural, biodegradable, and made from renewable resources. Enjoy a fun, creative hobby while supporting a good cause — here’s how to make soy wax candles at home.

Things You Will Need:

  • Soy Wax: You can purchase soy wax at your local craft store or online.
  • Mason Jars: Choose a mason jar with a lid to contain your candle as it burns.
  • Essential or Fragrance Oils: Select your favorite scent for your candle — you can find these at craft stores or online.
  • A Wicks: Choose a wick made from cotton or another natural material.
  • Wick Holder: This will help keep the wick standing upright in the soy wax.
  • Thermometer: This will help you monitor the temperature of the wax as you melt it.
  • Double Boiler: This helps melt the wax more evenly and avoid damaging it due to direct heating.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Gather all the items you will need to make the candle and set up your workspace. Make sure you have a heat safe surface to work on and all of your tools laid out and ready to go.
  2. Set up a double boiler by filling the bottom half of the boiler with some water and bringing to a simmer. Place your soy wax in the top of the boiler.
  3. Stir the wax using a wooden spatula to help it melt evenly and prevent it from burning. Monitor the temperature with a thermometer. Make sure it does not exceed 85 °C (185 °F).
  4. Once the wax has melted, add your desired scent of essential or fragrance oils to the wax. Stir the wax until the oils are thoroughly incorporated.
  5. Place your wick in the mason jar. Use the wick holder to keep the wick standing upright in the center of the jar while the wax cools.
  6. Carefully and slowly pour the melted wax into the jar over the wick. Fill it to the top, and make sure the wick remains centered as the wax cools and sets.
  7. Trim the wick once the wax has cooled and set completely. Your soy wax candle is now ready to use!

Tips & Warnings:

  • Be sure to monitor the temperature of the melted wax at all times — overheating it could cause it to become brittle and flake off during the pouring process.
  • Always keep an eye on your candle when it is lit. Do not leave it unattended and extinguish it once it reaches the end of its wax.
  • You can make a variety of differently scented soy wax candles at home. Experiment with different essential and fragrance oils to find the fragrance combination you like best.
  • Be sure to use only natural materials in the making of your soy wax candles.
  • Wax can get very hot, so be careful when handling it. Make sure it cools to room temperature before attempting to touch it.
