The Basics of Candle Making

Whether you just want to make candles as a fun activity or are looking to produce candles to venture into your own business, knowing what materials you will need to make candles is the first step. Here’s your guide to what you need for candle making.
Materials For Candle Making
The great thing about candle making is that it doesn’t require too many materials, and they are easy to find. Here’s a checklist of materials to get you started:
- Candle wax: The wax you choose will depend on the type of candle you’re making, but the most popular types are beeswax, paraffin, soy, and palm waxes.
- Wick: You will need a pre-tabbed cotton or paper wick that is sized to your mold. Candle wicks come in both synthetic fibers and natural fibers, and can vary in sizes and thickness.
- Melting pots: You will need something to melt the wax in, such as a double boiler pot, a regular pot on the stove, or a crockpot with a pouring spout.
- Thermometer: You will need to check the temperatures of the wax as it melts. This can be an ordinary cooking thermometer, or you can purchase a special candling thermometer.
- Coloring: This is optional, depending on the type of candle you’d like to make. Wax dyes are available in either liquid or paste form.
- Fragrance oils: This is also optional, depending on what type of candle you’d like to make. You can find different types of essential oils and fragrance oils at most craft stores.
- Molds: Molds can be found in many shapes and sizes, and are usually made of metal, wood, or plastic.
- Mold sealer: If you are making container candles, you will need to seal the wick to the bottom of the container.
- Piece of cardstock paper: You will need a sheet of paper that can be used to center the wick in the mold.
- Glue gun or metal clips: These will be needed to secure the wick to the bottom of the mold.
- Scissors: Used to trim the wick as necessary.
Additional Supplies – Optional
In addition to the materials listed above, there are various accessories on the market that can make candle making a lot easier and more efficient. Here are some optional supplies that you might find useful:
- A specialized melter or heat gun to heat and melt the wax instead of using a double boiler.
- A pouring pot, which allows the wax to be poured into the molds more easily.
- A wax dispenser, which enables the wax to be poured faster and more accurately.
- A scent additive, which is used to boost the scent of the candle.
