Can You Make Soy Wax At Home

Making Soy Wax at Home

Have you ever been curious about making your own soy wax at home? If so, you’re in luck because it’s actually a relatively simple process. Making soy wax candles at home has some benefits, including being able to customize the wax to your desired size, scent, and color — as well as saving money compared to purchasing pre-made candles. Read on to find out how to make your own soy wax at home.

Benefits of Using Soy Wax

  • Cleaner-Burning: Compared to other types of wax, soy wax emits a lower level of toxins, making it the eco-friendly choice.
  • Longer Lasting: Soy candles typically last 30-50 percent longer than their traditional paraffin wax counterparts due to the low melting point of soy wax.
  • Highly Scented: Soy is also great for when you want to add a really strong scent to your candle – it holds scent around 50 percent more than paraffin wax – so you can create a stronger aroma without overdoing it.

What You Need

  • 1 lb of soy wax flakes (or any desired amount)
  • Double boiler
  • Candle wicks and clips
  • Glass or metal jar
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Candle dye (optional)

How to Make Your Soy Wax Candle

  1. Place the soy wax flakes in a double boiler, slowly melting them over medium heat.
  2. Once the wax is completely melted, add the desired amount of essential oils and/or dye (if using).
  3. Carefully pour the wax into the jar, leaving 1/2-inch at the top.
  4. Carefully slide the wick into the jar, making sure it is standing upright.
  5. Attach the wick clip to the jar opening in order to hold the wick in place as the wax hardens.
  6. Let the wax cool for about 24 hours. Once cooled, trim the wick and light your candle.

Tips for Making Soy Wax Candles

  • Always use a double boiler when melting the wax in order to avoid any burning.
  • Be sure to follow all of the safety instructions indicated on the product packaging.
  • Let the candle cure for several days before using in order to let the scent and color fully develop.
  • Make sure to light the candle in a well-ventilated area and never leave it unattended.

Making soy wax candles at home is a great way to customize your candles and experiment with various scents, colors and sizes. With the right materials and a bit of patience, you can easily make your own soy wax candles and enjoy them for much longer than you would with a traditional paraffin wax candle.
