One of the first things you need to buy to start making candles is beeswax. Beeswax comes from the beehive of bees, which is why it is so expensive. You can buy it from a craft store or online at eBay. The best type of beeswax to use is called soy wax. Soy wax candles are a little bit harder to find but they burn longer than regular beeswax candles.
Another thing that you will need to buy is a glass jug with a tight fitting lid, and a stirring stick. You will also need some funnel so that you can pour the wax and wick into your glass jug. A double boiler can come in handy to heat up the wax and mix it all up. After the wax is heated, you just pour it into your jar, add a stick that you can stick into the bottom of the jar to keep the mixture from spilling out. Then let it cool and you will ready to make your candles.
The type of wicks you use will depend on the color of the candle. There are several different kinds including natural white wicks, colored white wicks and pink wicks. To melt the wax, you will need a bowl, a pan, a tall man with a wide opening and a wick inserted through the center of the opening.
Your slow-cooker should have a thermometer built-in, otherwise you will have to measure and burn by hand. When it is time to make homemade candles, you will need to add the wax and water mixture into your pan. The pan must be covered and either placed on the stove or an oven works just as well. If it is placed on the stove, remember that you need to place the pan on the heat source, not on a burner.
If you are using soy, remember to soak the paraffin wax before adding it to your mixture. You can make homemade candles from beeswax and vegetable oil, but if you want to make the best candles, you should use paraffin. This is because paraffin is easily burned while soy burns easily and produces very little smoke.
