Gathering the materials
- Candle Wax: This can be purchased at craft stores or, even easier, online! Most waxes come in beads and are typically separated by color.
- Wick: Candles need something to allow the heat from the burning wax to transfer from the candle wax to the flame, and the wick provides that. It can also be found in craft stores and online.
- Mold: This will be what forms the candle into a particular shape. Molds come in various sizes, shapes, and materials, like plastic and silicone.
- Thermometer: It is important to keep the temperature of the wax consistent in order to prevent any misshaping of the candle. A thermometer allows you to keep an eye on the temperature while you are creating the masterpiece.
- Color: This is entirely up to you and your preferences! Purchasing dye to color the wax is a simple and easy way to decorate and add some life to your candle.
- Scent: If you want your candle to smell nice, purchasing an essential oil or fragrance oil is the way to go. Just be sure to use a bit of trial and error when adding the scent, and make sure you are using it in accordance with the instructions!
Setting Up The Mold
Once all of your materials have arrived, setting up the mold is the next and arguably most important step. It is important to make sure the mold is properly set up before you pour any wax in. To do this, you must:
- Place the wick, typically metal or cotton, in the center of the mold with the metal base resting against the bottom.
- Secure the wick in the center of the mold. This can be done by either using a wick holder that comes with your purchase or by wrapping a bit of a string around the metal base to hold it in place.
Melting Wax and Pouring Into Mold
Once the mold is set up, it is time to melt and pour the wax into the mold.
- Fill a pan with a few cups of water and set it on the stove.
- Place a heat-safe bowl inside the pan, making sure the bottom of the bowl rests right on the surface of the water.
- Put the wax in the bowl and turn the heat on low. You don’t want to heat it up too much, as it will change the consistency of the wax and ruin your candle.
- Once the wax has melted, turn off the heat and use the thermometer to make sure the wax is the right temperature.
- If it is, take the bowl off the pan, put it on a heat-safe surface, and slowly pour the wax into the mold.
- Let the wax cool for about an hour-and-a-half before handling it.
Adding Color and Scent
Once the wax has cooled, it is time to add any scent or color to it if using either. Adding the scent and color of your choice is an easy process:
- If using color, slowly add the dye to the wax until it is the desired shade. Make sure to start with a small amount and slowly add more until you get the desired result.
- If using scent, make sure to add a few drops of the essential oil or fragrance oil and mix it with the wax. Be careful to follow the instructions on the bottle, as different scents require different amounts.
Creating the Candle
The last step is to create the candle.
- Trim wick: Before the wax completely cools, trim the metal base of the wick so there is only a small piece of visible metal. This is so the metal doesn’t end up as part of the candle.
- Remove from mold: Once the wax is completely cool, carefully pull the sides of the mold away from the candle and gently pull the wick out of the center. Now your candle is ready to light!
