* Candle Wax – Soy, paraffin, or beeswax
* Candle Wicks for the size of your candle
* Candle Dye – optional
* Fragrance – optional
* Containers – glass, metal, ceramic, plastic, etc.
* Heat source – pot or double boiler
* Thermometer
* Spoons and other utensils
* Wax Melting Pitcher
## Melting and Pouring
1. Start by melting the wax and measuring the temperature. You typically need to melt it up to a temperature of between 160-180F.
2. Prepare the wick and attach it to your container. This is usually done by using a wick sustainer and pinning it to the bottom of the container.
3. Add the fragrance and dye to your melted wax, stirring until it is completely mixed in.
4. Begin pouring the melted wax into the container.
5. When you’re finished pouring, let the candle cool for several hours. Feel free to add extra decorations to your candle, such as glitter or other material.

How to Make Candles
Candles are a great way to bring an atmosphere of warmth, light and peace to a room. Handmade candles look especially beautiful in a home setting, and can be a fun and creative project for the whole family. Here are the basic steps for making a simple, homemade candle.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
For your first attempt at candle making, try this simple tutorial using only a few supplies:
- Wax flakes or pellets: buy these pre-made or use wax that has already been melted and poured into molds to make shapes
- Mold: use a glass jar or tin can with an opening wide enough to thread the wick through
- Wick: you can buy candle wick with a metal base, or you can use cotton string
- Double boiler: to melt the wax
- Thermometer: to make sure the wax is not too hot
- Fragrance, color and decorations (optional)
Step 2: Melt the Wax
Place the wax in your double boiler and heat until it’s melted. Use the thermometer to check the temperature of the wax; it should be no higher than 130°F. When the wax is completely melted, it’s time to add color and scent (optional).
Step 3: Set the Wick
Cut the wick about 3 inches longer than the height of the mold, then thread it through the metal tab at the bottom and make sure it is centered. Tape the wick to the bottom of the mold, then place a pencil or skewer over the top of the mold, creating a bridge for the wick to the rim of the mold.
Step 4: Pour the Wax
Remove the melted wax from the heat and pour into the mold. Pour slowly to avoid overflow and ensure the layer of wax is even. Let the wax cool to room temperature before adding more wax.
Step 5: Add Additional Layers
If desired, you can add additional layers of wax for a thicker candle. Let each layer cool to room temperature before adding the next. You can also create layers of different colors and scents.
Step 6: Cool and Remove the Mold
Allow the wax to cool completely before removing the mold. Once it’s cooled, place the mold in cold water and leave it for a few minutes. Once the wax is cool it will begin to crack and shrink. Gently remove the mold and trim the wick to the desired length.
