Making a Soy Pillar Candle
Creating your own soy pillar candle can be a fun activity to do with your family. It is also a great way to save money. Soy candles burn cleaner than paraffin wax candles and last considerably longer. Here is the step-by-step for making your own soy pillar candle.
What You’ll Need
- Soy wax flakes or bars
- Scent oil
- A wick
- A double boiler
- A ceramic, metal or glass container
- An old saucepan
- Tape
- A wooden skewer or chopstick
- Matches
Instructions
- Fill your old saucepan with about 2-3 inches of water and place it on the stove on low-medium heat.
- Place the double boiler, filled with an appropriate size of soy wax, in the water. Heat until the wax is completely melted.
- Once the wax is melted, remove from heat and add a teaspoon of scent oil.
- Cut the wick to the desired length and tie it to a wooden skewer or chopstick.
- Place the wick into the container and use the tape to secure it in place in the center.
- Pour the melted wax into the container and fill it up to the top.
- Let the candle cool and harden for two hours.
- Once your candle is cooled, trim the wick to ¼ inch with a pair of scissors.
- Light the top of your candle using one of the matches.
Tips
- You can add crushed herbs, flower petals, or shimmer to the finished product for an extra decorative touch.
- You can pour a small amount of wax into your container and wait for it to harden. Then add additional melted wax to the pre-hardened layer so that the tops of the candle have a flat, even surface.
- Make sure the wick is not too long. A long wick can lead to the candle burning too intensely.
