Introduction
Candle holders have existed since the time of ancient Greece and Rome, even as early as 3100 BCE. The Egyptians used these special holders to burn incense, perfumes, and oils. They’re believed to carry positive energy that represents light and peace. Today, making your own candle holder out of wine glasses is a great way to re-purpose them into unique decorative pieces. This DIY project is fairly simple – all you need is a beautiful wine glass, a long wick, some wax, dye or color chips (optional), and fragrance (also optional). With just a few supplies from your local craft store or online retailer, you can make a stunning candle holder perfect for home decor.
Supplies Needed
Supplies Needed:
– Wine glasses or other types of glasses such as mason jars, jam jars, old glass bottles, juice containers or any other size or shape of containers that can house a candle
– Candle wax and wick (or alternatively you can use pre-made candles)
– Glue gun and glue sticks (or alternative strong adhesive such as thermal adhesive, epoxy glue or super glue)
– Decorative items like glitters, beads, sequins and/or ribbons to decorate the outside of the holder
– Measuring cups and spoons to melt the wax in (alternatively you can use double boiler setup with a large heatproof bowl nested inside a medium-sized pot with boiling water)
– Wooden spoon to stir the melted wax
– Other materials to add fragrance oils or colours to the wax if desired.
Prep
For making candle holders out of wine glasses, it is important to select the right type. Wine glasses come in many different shapes and sizes, so it is important to choose something that will work accordingly with the materials you plan on using to create your candle holder. For example, if you plan on using tea lights then a smaller glass may be best, as the smaller size will comfortably hold the source of light and not overpower your design. Similarly, if you are making a hanging candle holder for larger pillar candles then you may want a sturdier glass with a thicker base. This will allow it to support both the weight of the candle, and potential wind gusts without risk of tipping or breaking. Furthermore, always make sure there are no chips or cracks in your chosen glassware before you begin crafting.
Instructions
Step 1: Gather your materials. You will need a few empty wine glasses, glass adhesive glue, ribbon/string and scissors.
Step 2: Fill up each of the wine glasses about halfway with water then place them in the freezer for at least 20-25 minutes. TIP: This is important; if the glass isn’t cold enough when you try to make the candle holder it might break.
Step 3: Place one of your wine glasses on a flat surface and take out one of your ribbons . Cut the ribbon so that there is enough length to completely go around the circumference of your wine glass and make sure there’s some extra tail left over.
Step 4: After having cut your ribbon or string place it directly onto the outside surface of the wine glass in one continuous line then use a generous amount of your glass adhesive glue to stick it into place.
Step 5: Once all parts are secured, let the glue dry and harden properly before repeated use. Please note: make sure not to overlook this step as it is necessary for ensuring stability!
Step 6: Finally, all you need to do now is add your candles! These homemade candle holders are perfect for adding some cozy atmosphere to any space; enjoy using yours!
Decorating
Adding ribbons and beads to your candle holders can be an exciting way to customize them and make them look unique. To create a shimmery and luxurious finish that’s perfect for an event or special occasion, wrap thin metallic ribbon in one color all around the wine glass. Or, for a more eye-catching appearance, combine various colored ribbons for a combination of textures and colors. You could also use strings of faux pearls, crystals or faceted beads, which will give the finished product a sophisticated look when draped around the neck of each candle holder. Alternatively, you could glue on acrylic stones with extra strength adhesive glue or, if you prefer a more rustic feel, attach wooden carved shapes instead. Get creative by experimenting with different materials and patterns too ” you could even add little pom-poms on top of the rim or wiregrass at the base of each glass. The options are endless!
Tips
Tips:
1. To make your candle holders, explore ways to add interesting features such as a beautiful pattern around the stem of the glass or a custom etching near the lip of the opening. These will add character and style to your project.
2. Experiment with different types of glue and adhesives to keep your design sturdy and secure over time in order for it to last longer.
3. Look for decorative accessories like beads, ribbons, lace, or charms that can be attached to the glass for a more unique, decorative look.
