Adding Tips and Tricks
1. Use a shallow spoon that is not too large or wide to hold the wax in order to avoid spills and waste.
2. Heat your wax on a double boiler, stirring continuously until melted. You can also use a melt pot if you have one available.
Update 3. Select wicks (braided ones work best) that suit the size of your spoon, making sure to give an inch or two extra length so it can be secured tightly around the middle of the spoon handle once inserted into the wax.
4. Carefully drip melted wax into the bowl of your spoon, filling it up to the desired level and allowing space for the wick at its center.
5. Insert the wick into the wax, securing it firmly with tape on either side at the top of the spoon handle, as this will create stability during hardening period and ensure even burning when lit.
6. Allow candle to fully harden before trimming off any excess wick – typically this will take about four hours depending on how thick your wax is and how big your spoon is!
7. Finally, before lighting make sure there’s no debris on top of candle surface or around it, as this could cause uneven burning which could be dangerous!
Safety Precautions
When melting and handling hot wax, it is important to wear protective clothing including gloves and eyewear. Make sure that the area is well ventilated, as the fumes and heat from the wax can be dangerous. Additionally, keep all combustible materials away from the heat source. Don’t exceed manufacturer’s instructed temperature for melting wax (most fall between 135-145°F). Remelt stubborn wax in a glass jar placed within an electric skillet filled with water instead of directly on an open flame or burner. Finally, make sure to not leave heated candles unattended in order to avoid any accidents or fires caused by overheated wax.
Alternative Mixes
Making unique candles with spoons is a great craft to do at home. There are many combinations that you can use to make fun and interesting candles. Some mixes include:
• Beeswax and Soy Wax: This combination of waxes creates a longer lasting candle with a light, scent-free burn.
• Gel Wax and Paraffin: This combination makes for extremely creative and decorative finished products, as the gel wax allows you to make it appear solid yet still translucent.
• Coconut Oil and Essential Oils: Adding essential oils to this mix gives the candle its own personal aroma, while also increasing the burning time of the candle significantly.
• Soy Wax and Beeswax: The classic combination used for making beeswax candles, this mixture creates a stable structure when hardening. It is also easily customizable by adding different pigments or essential oils.
Troubleshooting
1) Hot Wax: When melting wax with a spoon, the wax may overheat and become too hot to handle. To prevent this, always place a protective barrier such as a heat-safe mat between the spoon and surface before melting. Additionally, never leave melted wax unattended.
2) Don’t Reach Full Temperature: If the wax does not reach its full melting temperature before being poured into the candle mold, it may not properly adhere to the wick or shape of the mold. To fix this issue, you should use a thermometer to ensure that the wax has reached its optimal temperature before pouring it into your mold.
3) Fragrance Oils: If you are using fragrance oils in your candle recipe, make sure that they are added after the wax has been fully melted. Adding them too early can cause them to evaporate or be prematurely burned off from the excessive heat from melting of the wax.
4) Improper Pour: If you pour your molten wax too quickly or unevenly into your wick and mold, it can cool and harden before setting properly in the desired shape or size. To avoid this issue, slowly and evenly pour small amounts of melted wax at a time until you have filled your mold completely.

For example you can cut a star shape or an abstract pattern into the body of the spoon before filling it with wax. You can also add embellishments such as ribbon around the outside of the spoon or sprinkle glitter over wet wax for a sparkly effect. Finally, you could use paint pens to write words or draw images onto the dry wax before filling it in with additional layers of colored wax.
