Making Soy Candles For Beginners

Making Soy Candles For Beginners

Making your own soy candles is a great way to create a unique and special atmosphere. Whether you’re creating a cozy environment in the living room, or trying to elevate the ambiance of a special event, creating a custom-made soy wax candle is an easy, fun and budget-friendly activity. And the best thing about making soy candles is that anyone can do it, even for the first time. Here’s a beginners guide to getting started.

Gathering Your Materials

Making your own soy candle might seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually not difficult to get going. All you need is the following materials:

  • Soy Wax Flakes: These are the base for your candles and are available at online craft stores or specialty candle shops.
  • Candle Wicks: Choose wicks made from natural cotton fibers.
  • A Container: Choose a non-flammable container to hold your candle, such as a ceramic or glass jar.
  • Fragrance Oil: Pick a fragrance oil, like a floral or sweet scent, that aligns with the atmosphere you’d like to create.

Melting the Wax

The next step is to melt the soy wax. To do this, get out a glass or metal bowl that can handle heat. Place the soy wax in the bowl and set it over boiling water and stir the wax occasionally until it has totally melted. Set aside for about 10 minutes to cool.

Saturating the Wicks

Now it’s time to saturate the wick with wax. Grab a pair of scissors and clip the wick so that it’s about 1/4-inch from the base and then wrap the remaining wick around the center of a pencil or dowel rod and lower the wick into the melted soy wax. Leave the wick submerged in the wax for a few minutes to let it get fully saturated with wax.

Adding Fragrance Oil

When the wick has been submerged in wax for a few minutes, lift it out and place it aside. Then add a few drop of fragrance oil to the wax and stir for a few seconds. You don’t want to add too much fragrance oil, as it can overpower the candle, so start with a few drops and then add more as needed.

Filling and Cooling the Containers

Now you’re almost there! Take your contaminate and slowly fill it with the melted soy wax. Once all the wax is inside, set it aside and let it cool for at least six hours. When the wax has cooled and hardened, trim the wick to about a 1/4-inch and your candle is ready to burn.

Making soy candles is really that easy. Whether you’re looking to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere or are just experimenting with making your own candle, soy wax is a great option to start with as a beginner. With this basic guide, you’ll be able to whip up a unique and special candle in just a few easy steps.
