Pillar Candle Making Equipment
Making pillar candles has become an increasingly popular hobby, as the materials and equipment needed to begin have become more readily available. Whether you’re looking to create decorative candles for your own home or hoping to launch a business, you may be wondering what kind of equipment you need to get started.
Basic Supplies
No matter what type of pillar candle you are making, there are certain basic items you will need. These include:
- Wax (paraffin or beeswax)
- Candle dye
- Fragrance oils
- A wick
- Safety equipment (such as safety glasses and gloves)
Melting Equipment
Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies, it’s time to get melting. For most small projects, all you need is a double boiler-style melting pot, which looks similar to a typical saucepan and costs around $20-$30.
However, if you plan on making a large amount of candles or your project involves melting multiple types of wax, you may want to invest in an electric melting pot or a wax melter. Electric melting pots cost around $50-$100, while wax melters can cost up to $200.
Molds and Containers
Pillar candles require molds or other similar containers to hold and shape the wax as it cools. You’ve probably seen pillar candle molds before — they look like cylinders with a hollow, cone-shaped inside and are typically made of metal or plastic. Depending on the size of the candle and the type of mold, the costs for a single mold can range from $5 for a small plastic mold to up to $125 for a larger metal mold.
You can also experiment with using other containers such as mason jars or recycled glass bottles. Although they provide a unique aesthetic, the containers may limit the size of the candle you’re able to make.
Additional Tools and Accessories
You may also need some additional tools and accessories to complete your candles. These include:
- Scissors or wick cutters for cutting wicks
- Thermometers for testing the temperature of your wax
- Wooden stirring rods for stirring the melted wax
- Glue guns for affixing the wicks to the bottoms of the molds
- Stands, racks or trays for cooling and securing your finished candles
- Heat guns for getting rid of any blemishes on the wax
Making candles can be of great fun and an easy activity once you have all the right equipment. Whether you plan on making one or one hundred candles, it’s always a good idea to have the materials you need at hand. Doing so will ensure you have a successful and enjoyable project.
