Second Pour Candle Making
Candle making can be a fun and rewarding hobby, but there are definitely some tricks of the trade that you should know before getting started. One of these trick is second pour candle making. So what is a second pour candle? A second pour candle is a candle that has gone through two stages of wax pouring.
The Benefits of Second Pour Candle Making
Second pour candles have become increasingly popular in the candle making community because of the many benefits this type of candle offers. Here are just a few of the benefits:
• More complex and beautiful candle designs: By creating a multi-layered second pour candle, you can create beautiful patterns and intricate designs that would be impossible to achieve with a single pour.
• Improved scent throw: The second pour encases the wicks in wax, which helps to increase the scent throw of your candles because more of the scent is sealed in with the wax.
• Easier to make: Second pour candles are easier to make than single pour candles because they don’t require any special equipment. All you need is wax, wicks and a double boiler.
The Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Second Pour Candle
Making a second pour candle is a simple process and requires no special tools or equipment.
Step 1: Heat the First Batch of Wax
The first step to making a second pour candle is to heat up your first batch of wax. Place the wax in a double boiler or in a heat-safe container in a pot of simmering water. Allow the wax to reach approximately 180°F before pouring it into your desired candle container.
Step 2: Add the Wick
Once the wax has cooled to around 160°F, it’s time to add the wick. Center the wick in the middle of your candle jar and secure it with a wick bar/tab or use a wick sticker.
Step 3: Allow Wax to Cool
Allow the wax to cool completely before adding the second pour of wax. Once the wax has completely cooled, trim any excess wick before pouring the second layer of wax.
Step 4: Pour the Second Layer of Wax
Once the first pour of wax has cooled, it’s time to pour the second layer. Be sure to heat the wax to 180°F before pouring. Allow the wax to cool to approximately 160°F before touching or moving the candle.
Step 5: Allow the Candle to Cool and Harden
Allow the candle to cool and harden completely before burning. Enjoy your beautiful second pour candle!
Conclusion
Second pour candles are a great way to get creative with your candle making and they offer many benefits over single pour candles. Try making a second pour candle and see what kind of beautiful creations you can make!
