Stearin Candle Making

Making Stearin Candles

Stearin Candle Making is an age-old custom and art that has been practiced by generations of devotees. Stearin is a type of wax derived from plants and made into solid, waxy blocks. It is sometimes referred to as “beeswax”. Stearin candles are also highly prized due to their longer burning time, soft glow and mesmerising dance-like flames.

Required Materials

Before you start your candle making journey, make sure you have all the necessary materials. Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need:

  • Stearin wax
  • Candle wicks
  • Pouring container/clay mold
  • Scissors
  • Stove
  • Permanent marker/pen
  • Thermometer
  • Small paintbrush

The Process

Now that you’ve gathered all the supplies you need, you’re ready to begin your candle-making journey! Here’s a step-by-step guide to walk you through the entire process:

  1. Cut the candle wick to the desired size and attach it to the bottom of the pouring container or clay mold.
  2. Melt the stearin wax in a double boiler on low heat. The wax should not exceed 90°C.
  3. Using the thermometer, check the temperature of the wax and add any dyestuff or scents according to your desired outcome.
  4. Once the dye or scent is added, use a paintbrush to evenly coat the lower section of the candle with melted wax. This will help the wick to stick better to the wax.
  5. With the help of a permanent marker or pen, draw a line around the circumference of the container or mold. This will serve as a guide as to how far it should be filled.
  6. Carefully pour the stearin wax into the container or mold, until it reaches the marked line. Make sure the wick is centered in the middle of the container or mold.
  7. In order for the wax to set, it must cool for at least 24 hours at room temperature.
  8. Once the 24 hours have passed, the candle is ready to be used. Light the candle and enjoy!
